Space Domain Awareness

Space Domain Awareness (SDA) encompasses surveillance, detection, tracking, identifying and characterizing objects in Earth orbit and beyond, ranging from fully functional satellites to space junk and debris.

    Both the estimates of the position and velocity of each object and the accuracy of these estimates are critical to capture the overall picture of space objects.  These estimates are acquired via various sensor domains (optical, radar, passive RF) and measurements (range, range rate, angles, and interferometric observations).

    Today, space is more congested and contested than ever before, and threats against U.S. capabilities grow every day. SDA enables the continuous preparation of the battlespace in order to fight and win a war in space.

    Our Approach

    Centauri’s expertise in high-fidelity physics-based modeling and simulation enables extensive and accurate assessment of proposed and developed SDA systems, evaluating new mission utility and saving the government time and funding. We have developed and applied models of electro-optical, radar, and passive RF sensors which produce measurements on space objects which are combined in optimal information fusion algorithms to provide object state estimation and the estimation’s accuracy.  We evaluate whether a sensor can “detect” the object; whether it is “bright” enough for an optical sensor, has adequate radar cross section for radar sensors, or radiates adequate power for passive RF sensors.

    We have expertise in the crucial capability of detecting the occurrence of a maneuver for active satellites, and estimating the parameters of that maneuver. We also assess the impact of maneuvers on the overall set of space objects, and on the ability of a set of sensors to continue to track the maneuvered objects.

    Our Intelligence Community (IC) support spans entire system hardware implementation and deployment, software and algorithm development, and dynamic evaluation of space objects. We have provided critical analyses for Department of Defense (DoD) and IC customers, which provide a crucial link in the chain for “what if” dynamic scenarios which model “friendly vs adversary forces,” and their actions and reactions.
